Surface Roughness Parameters: Understanding Ra vs Rz

In cylindrical finishing, checking a single roughness value is often insufficient to guarantee component functionality. For example, high peaks in a profile can pierce an oil barrier film, leading to rapid steel-on-steel friction.

  • Ra (Arithmetical Mean Roughness): The absolute arithmetic average of profile heights and depths across the sample length. It provides a general average metric but completely masks individual severe peaks or valleys.
  • Rz (Mean Roughness Depth): Calculated by taking the vertical distance from the highest peak to the lowest valley across five successive sampling lengths, then averaging them. It represents absolute peak heights, which is vital for high-pressure seals.

Geometry Analysis

Bore Geometry Tolerances: Cylindricity, Ovality & Taper

Machining errors in internal bores are usually grouped into three distinct categories:

Ovality (Out-of-Round)

The cross-section is elliptical rather than a perfect circle. Corrected by using floating fixtures and optimizing stone pressure distribution.

Taper Error

The bore diameter gradually narrows at one end. Remedied by setting standard overtravel strokes or configuring bottom dwellings.

Barrel & Hourglass

Bore diameter expands or narrows in the middle zone. Corrected by setting short strokes and adjusting stone expansion rates.
